The atrium, as it was called, was the place where the building developed around. The courtyard was the center of family life, usually without a garden, covered with stones or mosaics, acting as the main source of ventilation and lighting of the house.
Inside the courtyard there was often the well and always the altar -sometimes marble- for the performance of the house worship, while there were also various household chores.
