The legend speaks of the Giants buried under the imposing rock formations of Mykonos, which were destroyed by Hercules during the Battle of the Giants. Its name seems to indicate the "pile of stones" or the "stony place".

According to a later tradition, the island is associated with the hero Mykonos, son of the king of Delos Anios.
